User Experience & Design

Ask the Best Question

We begin projects by asking one simple question: Who’s visiting and why? Knowing the answers greatly improves your chances for success. It helps the team focus on the user and on exactly what they’re trying to accomplish. It’s amazing how often the identity of the users are unclear, and how often their needs are not well-understood. Understanding “Who’s visiting and why?” is crucial to a great start.

Identify the Best Flow

Once you have well-defined users and use cases, it’s time to draft potential application flows. We use a simple and powerful user-centric tool called UI Flow Notation to do this. For a given task, we layout the interaction between our user and our system in shorthand like this:

When you use this technique, it’s very easy to head-off confusion. If it’s confusing in UI Flow notation, it will confuse users.

May the Best Ideas Win

Team members and clients have great ideas and great arguments to back them up. Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to pick winning ideas through user interface testing. Here’s how it works:

• Prototype: When necessary, develop multiple prototypes of a tricky use case. We use Angular with Material Design components for this work because of the speed it affords.
• Recruit: Identify a handful of target users and ask for their help evaluating an interface. You’ll be asking them to complete a task so be sure to stress that you are not evaluating theirperformance. If they don’t succeed in the task, it’s only because our design is deficient.
• Ask a task: Give a subject a particular version of the UI and ask them to complete a specific task – something like “ship this 12″ cube 4lb package to this specific address,” or “add these items to your daily nutritional diary.”
• Watch and record: Observe your subjects work on the task. Record whether they succeeded. Tally their frustration indicators. Write down any system errors they encountered, or any “U-turns” they made.
• Measure: With a simple scoring system, the best ideas are easy to identify.

This straightforward testing system also lets you compare your finished project to a baseline (i.e. the ‘before’ version, or possibly a competitor’s application). That way, you’ll know if your new project is better or just different.

Build a Winner

When the best way forward has been agreed upon, we charter our Agile team and start building our minimum viable product (MVP). The sooner we get the real tool into the hands of the real users, the sooner their real, clear, accurate feedback will lead the project to a winning result.

We build systems with current tools, leveraging the appropriate technologies. We’re pretty keen on browser-based applications written in Typescript and JavaScript and calling RESTful services these days. But as masters of tech, we have a lot of flexibility in our implementations.
